Barker to Minny for Johnsson and Leddy

February 12, 2010

Breaking news: Cam Barker is the newest member of the Minnesota Wild. At least he knows Ebbett and Havlat already.

Coming to Chicago is Defenseman Kim Johnsson and prospect Nick Leddy.

Johnsson fits what the Hawks were looking for.  Defensive depth for the stretch and playoff runs with salary coming off the books at the end of the year since he’s a UFA.  He’s smaller, at 6-1 195 lbs.  He can QB the powerplay, which pretty much nullifies any loss from Barker leaving.

The most recent the Hockey’s Future has on him is from February of last year, but they were very high on him at that point.  He was a candidate for Mr. Hockey in Minnesota’s high school program.  Remembering back to the draft, the boys on TSN were very high on Minnesota picking him in the first round.  He stands at about 5’11” and has some offensive skill for a D-man.  The kid can skate like nobody’s business and developing him into a Duncan Keith-style player is what the Hawks should look to do.  He’s responsible in his own zone as well and projects to turn into a solid two-way defenseman.

Johnsson for Barker is a pretty good deal for the Hawks.  Everyone knew Barker would be gone because of his cap hit and poor play this year.  Johnsson helps next year’s cap and give us some depth on the back end.  Tossing in Leddy is like icing on the cake and is where Bowman, Bowman, & Sons Inc. really won out on this deal.  Getting something long term to load up the system in addition to the rental is something that not many GMs are able to pull off.

I am very excited to see Johnsson out on the ice with the Hawks!

Barker wasn’t terrible, but he never really appeared to add much to this great team. I don’t believe his absence will be noticeable; especially with his replacement.

As for Leddy, the fact that Bowman said they were interested in getting him during the last draft makes me excited to see what he eventually adds to the organization. It seems like the Hawks got a steal here! Only time will tell.

    2 thoughts..

We traded for SOLID road tested D-man….. Depth is needed for the playoffs..

Sad that the BHawks spent time developing Barker and then give him away…I think he will be a good fit with Wild.

LAST… still won’t kill the folks crying for help in the crease area….

Minny got a young defenseman for an aging one and a draft pick that wasn’t developing. Minny wins!

Minny got a young defenseman who has under-performed for years. Barker has been a complete liability in his own zone and has shown that his offensive upside is limited. Also, his cap hit is much higher than his relative ability.
Hawks got a rental who is only 33 (and will be 34 when he inevitably leaves on July 1st.) He provides depth and experience down the stretch and can help out the powerplay which has been struggling.
To say Leddy isn’t developing is asinine. He’s only 18 years old and has shown tremendous skating ability and solid defensive play. He still has at least 2 to 3 years to develop. He adds depth to the weakest area of the pipeline for the Hawks.
Sorry, but the Hawks win this one. They dumped what they didn’t want and what has been rapidly losing value this season, while addressing the two biggest needs in the long- and short-term.
